PACQUIAO ARRIVES TO ROUSING AIRPORT WELCOME IN LOS ANGELESAfter what was described as a “great flight” aboard Philippine Airlines, the world’s pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao arrived to a rousing welcome by hundreds of cheering fans at the Los Angeles airport on Saturday evening (LA Time.)
Conditioning expert Alex Ariza told us in an overseas telephone conversation from Pacquiao’s plush Palazzo residence that Pacquiao had “just finished eating and we are just hanging out.”
Ariza worked alongside celebrated trainer Freddie Roach both in Baguio City and the Gerry Penalosa gym in Metro-Manila to get Pacquiao into top condition for his “Fire Power” showdown at the MGM Grand on November 14.
Ariza said they “received a wonderful reception at the airport. It was really nice. Its good to be home but we we’ll still miss it over there in the Philippines.”
The conditioning guru who worked closely with three-time “Trainer of the Year” Freddie Roach to help develop Pacquiao into an explosive punching machine as shown in his demolition of David Diaz, Oscar De La Hoya and Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton told us that Pacquiao was “feeling good, ate a whole plate of food and really looks good.”
He said they planned to take a few hours off on Sunday and would be back at the Wild Card Gym on Monday morning.
In his last sparring session before leaving Manila on Saturday, Pacquiao went five rounds with undefeated Shawn Porter (10-0, 9 KO’s) and another five with Urbano Antillon at the Penalosa Gym prior to hearing Mass at the gym.
Ariza indicated that Pacquiao was “not at his best because he was looking ahead to LA” and a genuinely hard grind over the next couple of weeks when Roach is expected to push Pacquiao to the limit knowing that Cotto presents a tough challenge in their WBO welterweight title fight.
However, Ariza quickly added that “everything is good” and said they were where they wanted to be at this point in Pacquiao’s build up to the Cotto fight.
Ariza said they felt “right at home in the Philippines because the people were so warm and kind” adding the Philippines is “the best place I’ve ever been and I plan on spending Christmas and the New Year in Manila.”
Cotto has, in the meantime, played down Roach’s state
